Failed Physiotherapy

Knee Replacement After Failed Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is one of the most common treatments for knee arthritis. It can help improve muscle strength, flexibility, balance, movement, and ability to do daily activities. Some patients continue to suffer significant knee pain despite completing a structured physiotherapy program.

Physiotherapy has not been enough relief, so surgery should not be the next step. The first thing to do is re-assess the underlying condition.

Why Physiotherapy Ceases to Work

If arthritis has progressed a lot and there is a lot of cartilage loss, physiotherapy may not be very effective. Other reasons may be:

  • Severe deformity of the joint
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Weakness of muscles
  • Obesity
  • Incorrect method of exercising
  • Low adherence to the program
  • Another undiscovered knee problem

Your orthopedic surgeon can tell whether the problem is advanced arthritis or something else is causing the continuing symptoms.

When to Get a Second Opinion for Your Knee Problem

Talk to your doctor again about your symptoms if you:

  • Persistent pain despite adequate therapy
  • Walking gets harder
  • Pain when you are still or trying to sleep
  • Difficulty going upstairs
  • Decreased knee motion
  • Increasing reliance on pain medication
  • Moderate to severe interference with daily life

These symptoms alone do not prove that knee replacement is needed. They recommend if further evaluation is appropriate.

What Happens When Physiotherapy Fails?

Your doctor will review your X-ray and physical exam, your treatment history, activity level and overall health. The results will determine the options which may include continuing or changing physiotherapy, medication, injections, weight management or discussing surgery.

Knee replacement may be part of the treatment discussion for patients with advanced arthritis and ongoing functional limitations.

If your imaging and symptoms indicate that the deterioration of your joint has reached the stage where replacement is advisable, check with your knee replacement surgeon in Indore.

Is Physiotherapy Helpful Prior to Surgery?

Yes. Preoperative exercises could lead to improved muscle strength and overall physical condition. Your surgeon or physiotherapist can advise you on suitable exercises, depending on your mobility and medical condition.

Preparing for the next call

Don’t evaluate success of treatment purely on pain intensity. Think about if you can:

  • Walkable comfort
  • Go up stairs
  • Sleep free of knee pain
  • Do housework
  • Work as usual

Engage in things that are important to you

If these abilities are still severely restricted even with appropriate treatment, discuss the situation with your orthopedic specialist.

Physiotherapy is beneficial even if you have to get a knee replacement at some point. “The key step is re-evaluating the condition and considering why symptoms are still present before deciding on the next treatment plan.”
