Knee Replacement After Failed Injections

Knee injections are sometimes used to treat pain from arthritis when other non-surgical treatments are not enough. Depending on the patient’s situation, doctors may mention different types of injections. They are generally aimed at reducing symptoms and improving function but do not necessarily correct the underlying structural damage in an arthritic knee.

For some patients, an injection brings substantial relief; for others, relief is minimal or short-lived.

Why is relief inconsistent?

Several factors can affect the response:

  • Arthritis Severity
  • Site of joint damage
  • Kind of a shot
  • Activity status
  • Weight of the body
  • Other Conditions of the Knee
  • Individual treatment response

An injection that worked in the past may not work the same amount or for the same amount of time each time.

 When to Reevaluate Your Treatment?

If you have had multiple injections and the pain returns quickly, you can discuss the overall treatment plan with your orthopedic specialist.

Consider reevaluation if:

  • Relief gets shorter.
  • Pain disrupts sleep.
  • Walking is tough.
  • You limit day to day activities.
  • You’re increasingly dependent on pain medicines.
  • Physiotherapy and exercise alone are no longer sufficient.

These signs do not necessarily mean you need a knee replacement. They advise a re-evaluation of the condition.

What an orthopedic evaluation entail

Your doctor may take a look at your symptoms, examine the knee, and review imaging studies. In the discussion of arthritis severity, ongoing conservative care, rehabilitation, weight management, medication, or surgery can be included.

With advanced joint damage, if your symptoms persist, you may eventually need to consider knee replacement.

Consultation with a knee replacement surgeon in Indore can help determine whether the symptoms are consistent with advanced arthritis and whether replacement should be discussed.

Why You Should Not Repeat Treatment Without Reviewing It

Treating repeatedly without reassessment may not take account of the changing state of the knee. Treatment should be re-evaluated in terms of the degree of functional improvement and whether the benefits continue to outweigh potential risks.

Focus on Function Not Just Pain Scores

Ask yourself if you can:

  • Walk easy
  • Stair climbing
  • Sleep as usual
  • Job
  • Training
  • Get housework done

If these functions are still severely limited, discuss this with your orthopedic specialist.

Not all failed injections mean surgery is next. A new evaluation can help determine if other options are still appropriate, or if joint replacement should be considered.
