How Soon Can You Travel by Flight After Knee Replacement?

Flying is long sitting, cabin pressure changes and airport walking, so it warrants its own plan. A knee replacement surgeon in Indore will usually advise you to wait about 4-6 weeks before flying on a short domestic flight, and longer flights lasting several hours.

The main reason is clotting risk. Sit still in a cramped seat. This slows circulation. This is most dangerous in the first weeks after surgery. In the absence of urgency, many surgeons advise waiting about three months before a long international flight.

Preparations for the flight:

• Get your surgeon’s approval and ask for a short medical letter

• Book an aisle seat so you can easily walk and stretch.

• Request wheelchair assistance and early boarding at the airport

• Ask if compression stockings are right for you and wear loose clothing.

• Take medicines and your implant card in your hand luggage.

A common worry is airport security. Some modern implants will set off metal detectors, depending on the implant. Tell the security people, show your card or letter, and expect a soft manual check, no hassle.

If the seatbelt sign is off, walk up and down the aisle every hour or so during the flight. If you are unable to walk, point and flex your feet, rotate your ankles and push down on your calves regularly. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol which can dehydrate you.

Once there, rest first and expect some swelling in the ankle or knee. That is common, but any pain or tenderness in the calf; sudden breathlessness or chest pain needs immediate medical help.

Ask your Orthopedic surgeon Indore before booking tickets. The safest choice is a timing that suits your own healing.
